We Saved 90 percent of the Original Woodstock Site

I'm sure you know that "Woodstock" means so many things to so many people. It was a watershed event that defined a generation. But did you know that the Woodstock site is eligible for the National Register? Do you know about the plans, already underway, towards the development of that site, and are you aware of the efforts that pursued the preservation of those 38 acres.

My name is Joanne Hague, and I was a leader in those efforts. I am not here to promote a website, but more so the information it contains. We, preservationists, just short of having our concerns heard at the Federal level, were able to see a 90 percent downsizing of the Bethel Woods project. We believe it was a win-win decision for everyone involved. We, as a small group of concerned citizen’s with no preservation background, went up against all odds, and we would like to share our struggles and accomplishments.

In the wake of the efforts that took place in pursuit of the historic preservation, we’ve launched a new website which may be one of the best sources of Woodstock information for the interested public and students alike. The website is not only about Woodstock 1969, it’s about Woodstock: then and now. We believe that the facts, fiction, legend, mythology, and general power of what is "Woodstock" will continue through our youth and we developed a unique page as a place for our students to share their works; their projects and essays, with others, to enjoy and learn from, and we also provide the opportunity for students to correspond with people who attended the event in 1969. We also feature "Memories" - a place for those who attended that event, to have the opportunity to share one of their own. In addition, our website also serves as a template for other grassroots historic preservation movements. A multitude of information, photos, video, audio and more, abound on this website. Unlike other Woodstock ‘tribute’ websites, the Woodstock Preservation Archives serves to ensure that the struggle to preserve the festival site is not lost as Bethel Woods rises in the Catskills, and also to inspire others to speak up for what they believe in, regardless of the barriers that face them. I assure you that this website is fun, interesting, educational and informative, and in the spirit of the original Woodstock advertisement catchphrase, the Woodstock Preservation Archives provides "Hundreds of Acres to Roam On."

I’d like to personally invite everyone to visit our new website: Woodstock - Preservation Archives (www.woodstockpreservation.org).

It started back in January (moon 7 on the 13 moon calendar: totem animal, monkey). Observing it to be too cold to play outside, and overwhelmed with another exciting installment of what cursing intellectuals refer to as a “university semester,” Jesse the Vessel (foggy-minded thesis factory) and Heather Bliss (psycho-linguistic psychotic multi-linguist) were simply chained to their humming, stuttering computers. The absolute horror.

The key-board soon proved to be a key-for-the-bored, however, as tribe.net became the hub for a frenzy of obscure, thoughtful (nay, evil and adorable) messages, sent between Ottawa and Calgary on an unseen electronic highway (no doubt closely monitored by some hidden government employee with an open, drooling mouth and part-heart left untrampled by the cold machinations of his Orwellian superiors).

Discussion topics between these two childish academics included broken hearts, the art of naked door-answering (in conjunction with religious salespeople, add a sprinkle of homosexual suggestion and watch the magic unfold), and the colour orange. ‘All organisms need watering to grow – that’s why we cry.’

After some initial hesitation, web cameras were in full effect, and as spring icicles fell – penetrating the thawing earth with their melting glassy tips – so too did these two hearts warm to one another. With dark eye circles (affection having beaten them into submission) and several million scholarly essays behind them, the two anticipated a real life interaction. How incredibly exciting! (you see that situation).
Inspired by his Taoist studies, Jesse sold his possessions and jumped in the TransCanada river, which carried him to Heather’s crystal apartment. Risk. Jittering stomachs.

Outside, pigeons had sex on looming balconies. Real eyes met. Real voices were heard; real nerves – exposed. Vulnerability, palms and bellies. Two actual humans, bare and honest before one another! Trips and arrivals. Births and deaths. After a week of horrific intensity, unprecedented intimacy, direct knowing, Invader Zim cartoon insanity, and sidewalk-chalk vandalism, the Universe erupted into another perfect stillness amidst the silly human story, recognizing its indivisible self in this shattered mirror of apparently different faces. The Vessel was filled with Bliss; the Bliss found a Vessel. Now, neither exists, and yet both remain.

Humans(!) know this: you are complete on your own, but there is no own-being. Let your lovers show you your glorious emptiness!! And look – something stands beside this story’s ephemeral union of a Jesse and a Heather. A sign that reads, “You there – the reader. Have you found the Life of this place?”

Feeling the dance, despite the falling curtains of our autumn century.
-Jesse the Vessel and Heather Bliss (turning back to the cartoons)......

Although each individual component of the Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball would make for a fun evening out on the town, it's the grandness of this event that sets it apart from all others. The Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball is a Sound & Vision Musical that tells the tale of Nick Fudrich, a Detroit River dock worker during the prohibition era. As with the finest fashion collections, several common threads are used to tie together the individual components of this production: Music, fashion and staging inspired by the 1920's. Actors to give the event its grounding. And a bold narrator.

I had already been wanting to move out of the house. I could get my freedome back. Still after 3 fights in a week and a half I realized that things were only gonna get worse. As our arguments always ended with him saying "move out", I decided to do just that.

I put an ad in craigslist.com as well as here to see if anyone might be able to find me a room for me to live in the price range that would make anyone cringe. In the bay area, 400 dollars max is gonna make the search difficult in such a place where gas goes for $2.30.

On tribe.net I found that people in my network and in the groups I posted (SF Bay Freaks, SF Bay Furries, Kinky Roomates) were eager to at least give me some advice or point me in a direction. Kinky Roomates is a tribe that I signed up for long ago because it suits what I would like when I finally moved out....a kink friendly household.

I found a place and will be moving the rest of my things in this week. This will make me very happy despite the emotional bumps Im running over.

As the end of the busy season approached at my summer job, I'd been scouting more permanent employment. A process made especially stressful due to my indecision as to whether I wanted to remain in the restaurant industry or return to a more traditional work environment/schedule, etc.

A customer, Robin, at the bar where a Tribe buddy, Jeremy, bartends mentioned that the restaurant that he works at needed people. Dave, Jeremy's boyfriend, and also another close Tribe friend, called me to see if I was interested in stopping by and talking restaurant with Robin. I was. We did.

He passed on the word to management, I stopped by to drop off a resume and a trial shift was arranged for this last Friday afternoon. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be one of the busiest nights in the restaurant's history. Instead of being there for a few hours and management contacting me in a few days with the yay or nay, as initially indicated, I was asked to come aboard as a permanent, full time bartender on the spot at the end of a crazy 11 hour shift.

Not only is a great weight lifted off my mind, having the whole job search thing behind me, but the quality of product that I'm working with as well as the work environment I've now returned to are precisely the aspects that I had been missing at this summer's job. Within hours, I felt entirely in my element and I could not be more thrilled.
(Poor Walter, I've bored him with this story 2x now...)

My cat Cleo had her life literally saved by Tribe.Net.

She was vomiting and dehydrated, and I took her into an emergency vet to figure out what was wrong. After testing her for kidney problems and stomach problems, the couldn't figure out what was wrong. They basically rehydrated her and released her to my vet.

My vet was very pessimistic about her chances-- she diagnosed cancer. She was in bad shape and in quite a bit of pain. I spent a free afternoon with her in the animal hospital holding her and crying. I was such a mess that the vet tech let me take her home for the evening. We were going to give her an ultrasound to confirm tumors and then i'd put her down.

The ultrasound found nothing. NOTHING! My vet thought hmmm, maybe feline irritable bowel syndrom and gave her a shot of prednisone.

Now this is where Tribe comes in. Walter, a cat lover and life saver, is the moderator of the very busy and fun cat tribe. And I posted my adventures there, and another cat-lover/lifesaver combo named That Woman wrote and told me about changing her diet to all-meat. I learned a great deal about cat nutrition from her, from that thread and from the various links she sent me to. I immediately switched my cat's diet from driy kibble to all meat, no grain. Between that and the Prednisone, my cat perked right up.

In fact, she's playful now. Not in pain. And her coat is thicker and healthier. Both her and her sister are in much better shape, and now I get to keep her.

The best thing I've found about Tribe is the community-- all of us are willing to share stories, information, friendship and connection. This place is truly precious to me.

> 2 years ago I moved out of SF to LA.

> Last year I was invited to Tribe to join the SFNet Nostalgia tribe.

> This month I sold my sticker/laminator machine on Tribe, to raise funds for new running shoes to run in an LA 5k event this Spring.

> It was sold to a woman who saw my posting in the "Placing Things on Top of Things" tribe (stickers, get it?) who absolutely loves stickers!

> It turns out that she is the woman who started the SFNet Nostalgia tribe. We never knew each other from SFNet (different eras) but have plenty of friends in common who transitioned both our eras.

> In lieu of shipping fees, we are going to meet for coffee when I am next in San Francisco (her treat!) and finally meet another "SFNetter".

> Tribe is a virtual community that even brings now-defunct communities together!

Last december I wrote a testimonial for a woman who I've known as an acquaintance for several years now; as if I'd know her all my life. She just responded on monday to the testimonal saying we should get together and meet. We met on tuesday afternoon after my yoga class, and her pilates class, at Turks on the Drive in Vancouver. The date ended with me leaving her place after having watched a movie and the both of us exclaiming our happiness at having connected. It was through tribe that it was all made possible, and I'm happy say !Props! to tribe for it.

I sold an extra set of Le Creuset cookware on Tribe. The cool thing was that I had the cookware delivered (by my boss, once of the co-founders) to the recipient. She didn't have the cash on her to give to my boss, but sent it to me via another friend 2 days later.

She could have just kept the cookware without paying me, but because of "6-degrees of separation" I trusted that she would be as good as her word and she was!
Success!
